Local Chesham based charity Dreamflight is asking everyone to consider holding an event for ‘Dreamflight Day’ on Friday 18th May. The events can be large or small and the only rule is that they must involve cake, fun and a bit of fundraising!
Ideas so far have included cake sales/bake offs at schools/colleges/workplaces, coffee mornings, an afternoon tea with friends and BBQs with a ‘bring a cake’ dessert. All funds raised from these events will go towards this year’s annual trip to Orlando.
Since 1987, almost 6,000 children have experienced Dreamflight and – for many – it has been a life-changing experience. The children are nominated by a medical professional and all have a serious illness or disability. Parents are not allowed on the trip, but instead a huge volunteer team of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and other helpers look after the children for 10 days.
Dreamflight is not just a holiday; it does something that medicine can’t. The children leave their families behind giving them an opportunity to discover independence, confidence, and a whole new outlook on life. Often for the first time, these children realise that they are not alone, and they are not the odd one out. They see children around them who have also suffered, they gain perspective, and experience things they never thought possible.
The Charity believes that fun and joy are just as important as medical research and equipment – especially for children who perhaps can’t wait long enough for the breakthrough they need or whose illnesses and treatments have brought pain, distress and disruption to their lives.
The cost for each child is approximately £3,500 for the whole trip (£350 per day).
